| Many years ago in Brazil, I began teaching English as a Second Language to supplement our income as our young family continued to grow in stature and number. Over the years as I taught ESL in private schools, in private homes, in schools and in companies and organizations, I became familiar with many courses. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the fact that a beginning student had to face the fact that he would not learn to speak even conversational English until he had completed almost a year of classroom instruction in a regular course.In the beginning years I followed the course books and teacher’s manuals in the schools where I taught but soon began teaching private classes on my own during which I ended up redesigning ESL materials to meet the need of the individual student. |

This soon developed into the creation of content-based ESL courses which included such courses as “ESL for the Traveler”, “ESL for International Hotels and Restaurants”, to name a few. I even ended up teaching English to a small group that was legally deaf and hard-of-hearing. One thing all of these students had in common was the need of English to better their job prospects and also to increase their salaries as bilingual employees and administrators.
On return to the U.S., I continued my development of English in 24 HoursSM and worked with local faith-based and community-based organizations to serve the individuals and groups of immigrants who basically needed to learn English for work and education here in their country of adoption. In short periods of time, three to six months, adult learners were able to enter the work force, continue education in higher learning institutes as a result of studying in an environment that helped them to learn not only how to speak English, but also to reach fluency through learning to think in English and applying principles that taught them to be self-sufficient in their learning.
After almost thirty years of teaching, I am proud to see my students in all walks of life, prosperous, successful and confident in their abilities to use the English language as a tool for reaching their personal goals, continuing their education and getting a better job. Age is not a barrier in this course and neither is educational background or lack of owing to the creative methodology and simplicity of the course lessons.
To me there is nothing more rewarding than an instructor and a student experiencing positive results such as obtaining a job which requires speaking and understanding English in a short amount of time through using English in 24 HoursSM or being able to advance to the next level of instruction in a traditional higher learning institution.
